First milk matters most for your baby’s protection. Like a small vaccination, each feed offers your baby your own unique antibodies. Even more, the living, bioactive factors stimulate and develop your baby’s own immune system. So more than calories, first milk is pure protection. Because a baby’s early feeds are normally small (a teaspoon), and very frequent, babies lose weight for the first 3-4 days. The normal weight loss graph, along with other indicators (baby’s behavior, pooping and jaundice level) will give us early feedback. If there are concerns, the best thing to do is nurse your baby more frequently (10-12 times a day) and spoon feed him your hand expressed milk (after every breastfeed or as often as possible). This will trigger milk production, decrease weight loss and decrease jaundice. Always remember, you can never over-feed a baby your early milk, which is called colostrum.
